Boxer Andre Berto a Champ Inside, Outside Ring

April's career-defining, eighth-round knockout of Puerto Rico southpaw and former world champion Carlos Quintana by WBC welterweight (147 pounds) champion Andre Berto was executed under extremely difficult, emotional conditions.

Not only did the 26-year-old Berto (26-0, 20 knockouts) have to overcome a second-round tear in his left bicep during his fourth title defense, but the Haitian-American already was fighting with a heavy heart. Berto dedicated much of the bout's proceeds to Haiti's disaster relief as a result of January's earthquake that devastated the island nation and killed eight of his relatives.

A Winter Haven, Fla., resident, Berto was facing a southpaw for the third straight time against Quintana, following victories over Juan Urango and Luis Collazo.
