Stamford's Connecticut international roots give way to World Cup fever

Nearly every day, Gary Poteau flicks on his flat screen television and finds a soccer game that is playing somewhere in the world. At least four channels are beamed into his living room on the city's West Side.

"There's always some kind of game on," he said, illustrating his point with several clicks of his remote.

A coach and referee for several men's leagues in Stamford, the 48-year-old considers himself a passionate student of the game who can derive enjoyment from any match.

But none will compare with the ones beginning Friday in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
